There is nothing more exciting than owning a home you have built. Along with that joy, though, come a thousand small and large decisions during the building process. One of those decisions is kitchen design.

At the center of the home is the kitchen and cooking center. You get to decide what kind of cabinets you desire.

When you are trying to decide whether to have painted kitchen cabinets or natural finish cabinets, there is no one clear rule on the subject.  It is a matter of personal preference.  Some tips can help you to choose the style you will like the most.

Painted cabinets are an excellent way to begin, or to enhance, a theme.  For example, if your kitchen curtains, towels, or walls reflect a particular color or print, painting the cabinets in a color to either coordinate or contrast with theme will create a lovely effect.  The decor of the entire kitchen will be more pulled-together and beautiful.

Natural finish cabinets go well with nearly any decor.  You do not need a rustic design to truly appreciate their natural beauty.  They can lend a special touch to a colorful kitchen, or look great as the room’s focal theme.

Another point to consider is the color of your kitchen cookware. You would not want to have bright orange enamel pans with pink painted cabinets, would you? It would clash.

If you are thinking about a natural touch, you have some nice options.  While natural does not necessarily mean leaving the wood completely unfinished, this option can be very attractive.  However, you may wish to add on to the natural wood.  Its appearance can be brightened with a varnish.  Selecting a stain for wood cabinets is another possibility.

No matter which idea you are considering, check out the current appearance of the kitchen and think of the theme you would like to create.  Whether you plan to improve the cabinets you already have, or buy new ones, creating an inviting kitchen atmosphere is not difficult at all.  It can become your favorite spot in your home, and the ideal place to entertain your friends and family.
