Kitchen cabinet refinishing is by far your cheapest option if you want to make your kitchen cabinets look like new. It is cheap since you can do it yourself, and you will not need any expensive materials since only a sanding sponge, de-glosser, and varnish are required. If you want to change the color of your kitchen cabinets, you can also purchase some paint. Here are the steps that you will need to take in order to do your own cabinet refinishing at home:
• Remove all of the kitchen cabinet doors from their hinges. This is important so that you will be able to do the refinishing thoroughly. Make sure that you put little number marks on the cabinet as well as its place so that you will not have a hard time looking for its place later.
• Place the doors on a table covered with newspapers so that your table or the floor will not get dirty. Using the sanding sponge or paper, sand out your kitchen cabinet doors so that the old varnish will be removed. The dirt will also be removed this way. This is important because if you do not remove the varnish, the new coat that you will apply later will not stick to the surface for long.
• You can use the de-glosser for a more clean finish, since sometimes sanding will not remove all of the varnish as well as the grime and dirt. Once all of the varnish has been removed, you can now use the paint if you want to change the color of your cabinet walls for a new look. But if you want to retain its wood color, you can stain it in order to bring out the color of the wood.
• After you are done staining it, let it dry, and then if it is already dry you can now apply the varnish so that it will have a glossy look. This will also protect the paint or the stain that you applied. Then let the varnish dry.
• You can now install your cabinet doors if they are completely dry. You can use the numbers that you put earlier as a guide.
Since you will be doing the cabinet refinishing, you might as well change the hinges if you think they need updating. This will add to the new look you are going for.
