Different Grass Types for Different Yard Needs

When choosing the type of grass to put in the yard, it is imperative to consider not only the geographic location, but also factors like the amount of sun and shade the yard receives, and when it receives it. How much moisture is important, whether it is rain or a sprinkler system, as well as how much work the homeowner wants to devote to the yard.

By knowing the different grass types, it will be easier to use the best grass for a particular lawn. Some of the most common grasses used throughout the United States are Zoysia, Bermuda, Fescue and Centipede grasses.

Zoysia grass is a very drought tolerant grass that works well in the Southern and Upper Southern states. It may turn brown when it goes dormant in colder months, but in the warmer seasons, it is a lovely green and has a nice soft carpet appearance.

Bermuda is similar to Zoysia grass and is found worldwide in many warm areas. It does extremely well in Southern and Upper Southern U.S. states. It is also often used in parks, golf courses, and sports fields as it creates a very pretty, smooth carpet like lawn. For a full sun, low moisture area, Bermuda may be the perfect grass.

Fescue is a pretty, taller grass that holds its green color throughout winter months and colder temperature. However, it does need more water so is not a great choice for drier areas, unless the homeowner is able and willing to water extensively. With the different types of Fescue, it is a grass that is used throughout the United States. If this is the choice, just make sure the chosen type works well in the geographic zone.

Centipede is a great coastal grass for hot climates, like the Gulf Coast states and the Southeast. It is a low maintenance grass and does well in the sandier more acidic soils of coastal regions. It grows very low and does not go dormant in winter months.

With a little knowledge of different grass, any lawn can be looking its best. Make sure that proper care and maintenance is given to the grass and lawn, and perhaps there could soon be a Yard of the Month sign in the grass!
