Apron Sinks, Under mount Sinks and Self-Rimming Sinks
If you need to buy a new sink – whether you’re redecorating or just need a replacement – knowing the different types that are available is vital for making the right choice. There are more types of sink than many people realise and each has their own advantages and disadvantages. This article will talk specifically about apron sinks, under mount sinks and self rimming sinks.
Apron Sinks – An apron sink is a traditionally designed sink that was often used in farmhouses towards the end of the 19th century. They have large basins and an exposed front panel that isn’t covered by a work surface or fake drawer. The disadvantage to having an apron sink is that they often require a modified cabinet.
Under mount sinks – Unlike apron sinks an under mount sink is specifically made to blend in with the work surfaces. If you’re decorating a modern kitchen then an under mount sink may be a good choice. The downside is that it can only be used with a concrete or similar work surface. An advantage is that they’re one of the easiest sinks to maintain and keep clean.
Self-Rimming Sink – A self rimming sink has a rim that goes above the counter which makes it very easy to install. However, you don’t get that seamless finish that you get with an under mount sink. An advantage is that they’re relatively easily to replace and they can be used with a number of different types of work surfaces.
These are just some of the different types of sink that are available. When buying one you should take into account the cost, style and how difficult the installation will be. Some sinks are much easier to install than others. Plumbing and fitting can add up to a major cost so you need to be aware of this before you buy.
